Godzilla Film Locations in Hawaii
He’s back! Godzilla roars into theaters this weekend with the release of Godzilla 2014. Godzilla filmed in Vancouver before moving production to Hawaii in June. The Godzilla Film Locations in Hawaii included Duke Kahanamoku Beach and the parking lot at Kaiser Beach.
Waikiki welcomed the huge half-acre Godzilla set. The Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach looked like the location of a catastrophe. Hotel ruins, a crashed helicopter and boat wreckage were stacked along the beach. Hundreds of extras were cast as dazed victims seeking help.
Another scene was shot one evening on Lewers Street in Waikiki. More than 300 extras were cast to run screaming down the street as if Godzilla loomed overhead.
Godzilla opens May 16, 2014. The movie stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Ken Watanabe and Bryan Cranston. Elizabeth Olsen spoke about the themes of Godzilla stating, “There’s a strong theme about the importance of family in it as well as the theme of trying to control nature and how that backfires in the end.” Director Gareth Edwards described Godzilla as an anti-hero: “Godzilla is definitely a representation of the wrath of nature. The theme is man versus nature and Godzilla is certainly the nature side of it. You can’t win that fight. Nature’s always going to win and that’s what the subtext of our movie is about. He’s the punishment we deserve.”
This is not the first time Godzilla has stormed the Hawaiian Islands. Previous Godzilla movies have been filmed on Oahu and Kauai. You can still see Godzilla’s footprints at Kualoa Ranch on Oahu. Godzilla is just one of many movies that chose Hawaii as their backdrop. Since 1913 Hawaii has been the location of a variety of Hollywood productions. Hawaii Movies include Hunger Games Catching Fire, Jurassic Park, The Descendants, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Pirates of the Caribbean, Soul Surfer, Pearl Harbor, 50 First Dates, From Here to Eternity, South Pacific, Blue Hawaii, King Kong, Point Break, Pearl Harbor and much more!
