Since 1913 Hawaii has been the backdrop of a variety of Hollywood productions. Hawaii Movies include Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Godzilla, Pearl Harbor, From Here to Eternity, South Pacific, Blue Hawaii, King Kong, Point Break, Pearl Harbor, 50 First Dates, Pirates of the Caribbean, Soul Surfer, The Descendants and much more!
Hawaii has hosted 23 major television series, including Hawaii Five-O, Fantasy Island, Magnum P.I., Jake and the Fatman,The Byrds of Paradise, Baywatch Hawaii and my personal favorite, Lost.
In November Hawaii became the host of another blockbuster production – The Hunger Games Catching Fire. Catching Fire was added to the list of Hawaii Movies when it began filming on Oahu’s North Shore. The film stars Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen – my personal hero. If you have read The Hunger Games and Catching Fire you will understand why Oahu is the perfect location for the Quarter Quell games.
Catching Fire is scheduled to shoot on Oahu for about four weeks. Hunger Games Filming locations include Waiehee & Heeia State Parks, Kawela Bay, Paradise Park, and Kawela Bay in Hawaii.
There are many locations from Hawaii Movies that you will recognize from the Big Screen. On Oahu you can check out KOS Hawaii Movies Tours with Lost Locations and experience beautiful Kualoa Ranch with locations from Lost, Hawaii Five-O, Jurassic Park and more! Read about my Lost Tour Adventure part one and part two! The Grand Circle Island Tour and Chief’s Luau combo also makes a stop at Kualoa Ranch so not only can you see film locations of amazing shows you can end your day at one of the best live shows in Hawaii – Chief’s Luau at Sea Life Park! If you explore Oahu’s North Shore you may even stumble across a few Hawaii film locations on your own.
On the Ko Olina Snorkeling and Dolphin Encounter we saw the Black Pearl from the most recent production of The Pirates of the Caribbean.
Kauai is the stunning backdrop of my favorite scenes in The Descendants. Be sure to spend some time at Hanalei Bay. You can even stop at Tahiti Nui for a drink! Check out my post about Kauai locations seen in The Descendants.
Hanalei Bay is also a famous location from the film South Pacific. Bethany Hamilton, the inspiration behind Soul Surfer, surfs Hanalei Bay and you may even run into her there like my friend Elizabeth did. I had a chance to channel my inner Soul Surfer as I hit the waves in Hanalei Bay.
Kauai’s Na Pali coast is featured in the Hawaii Movies Six Days, Seven Nights, King Kong and Tropic Thunder. Check out Kauai Helicopter Tours to find out why Hollywood loves this film location.
All of this talk of movies has me longing for my carefree days when I had free time to be an extra. I never wanted to be an actress but I loved being on set and experiencing the magic of movie making. I spent many days on the set of Dawson’s Creek but my favorite experience was being on the set of George Clooney’s film, Leatherheads. This photo reminds me of the days on set and the glamorous/not so glamorous world of film.
Have you been to any film locations of Hawaii Movies or been an extra on set in Hawaii?
