Hawaii Whale Watch Tours
If you are going to be in Hawaii between December and May be sure to reserve Hawaii Whale Watch Tours! As many as 10,000 humpback whales travel to Hawaii from their summer home in Alaska. Maui is one of the best places for Hawaii Whale Watch Tours. I couldn’t wait to get on the water and look for these majestic creatures.
I reserved a tour with Pacific Whale Foundation. Pacific Whale Foundation is a non-profit organization founded to save whales from extinction. Their mission is to protect the oceans through science and advocacy. Pacific Whale Foundation conducts humpback whale research in Hawaii, Ecuador and Australia. If I was going to look for whales I wanted to go with the experts!
The second thing I did when reserving my Maui Whale Watch Tour was reserving a tour on a high-tech raft. Many Hawaii Whale Watch Tours operate from catamarans or large vessels but I wanted to experience water-level encounters with Maui’s humpback whales. I chose the Whalewatch Lahaina Raft Tour.
We climbed on board the Pacific Whale Foundation’s high-tech raft Ocean Freedom. Ocean Freedom is a sleek rigid hull inflatable raft with a unique anti-slamming design for a smoother ride than ordinary rafts. We said Aloha to the Lahaina Harbor as we began our search for Humpback Whales.
It was April, the end of whale watch season in Hawaii, so I wasn’t sure how many whales we would see. I was pleasantly surprised when we had our first Humpback Whale encounter a few minutes into the trip. I was amazed by the size of the whales – adult whales weigh 25 to 40 tons. We saw the whales “breach” which is when a whale propels itself out of the water. We saw whales “tail slap” which is forceful slapping of the flukes against the water – the sound can be heard for miles. We also saw the water rise above the ocean when the whales would “blow” which is their pattern of exhalation and inhalation at the surface. When we saw a whale do a fluke dive – we knew it was heading for deep dive and we would continue our search for more whales.
Another highlight of Hawaii Whale Watch Tours is the opportunity to hear the song of the whales. The humpback song is sung by the males. It is made up of repeated themes and can last for up to 30 minutes. We used a hydrophone to listen to the song that humpback whales use to communicate.
Pacific Whale Foundation’s certified marine naturalists provided expert information about the whales’ behaviors throughout the tour. Sightings are guaranteed, or you get a free ticket for a regular Pacific Whale Foundation whalewatch.
I had a great time on the Pacific Whale Foundation Whalewatch Lahaina Raft Tour. Seeing majestic Humpback Whales is a magical experience. Be sure to reserve Oahu Whale Watch Tours, Maui Whale Watch Tours, Big Island Whale Watch Tours or Kauai Whale Watch Tours with Hawaii Discount.
