Pearl Harbor and Memorial Day in Hawaii

Memorial Day is a day to remember those who have died serving our country. There are several Memorial Day activities on Oahu to show your respects to the men and women who lost their lives serving in the United States Armed forces.

Pearl Harbor

On the USS Arizona, 1,177 crew members lost their lives during the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. The USS Arizona Memorial, honoring those that lost their lives, was dedicated on in 1962 on Memorial Day.  Special events will be held at the USS Arizona Memorial to commemorate the 50thanniversary of the Memorial. On Monday, May 28 each ticket holder to the USS Arizona Memorial will receive a commemorative card, a tribute flower and can participate in a floral tribute. Those that donate at least $50 to the USS Arizona Memorial Restoration Project are invited to participate in a special Sunset Boat Tour to the USS Arizona at 5:30 Sunday and Monday.

Punchbowl Cemetery

The Mayor’s Memorial Day Ceremony begins at 8:30 am at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. A rifle volley will be begin at 9:15 am which will last around 5 minutes and be followed by Military flying over at Punchbowl at low-altitude.

Lantern Floating

The 14th annual Lantern Floating will take place May 28, 2012 on Ala Moana Beach. The lanterns include special messages to loved ones who have died, hopes for the world and prayers to God.  This Memorial Day tradition remembers war heroes, victims of natural disasters and other loved ones. Over 3,000 candle-lit lanterns will illuminate the ocean. Last year over 40,000 people came out for this spiritual event and time of reflection.

The Lantern Floating is a free event and is open to people of all religions and spiritual beliefs.

Lanterns will be available at the Lantern Request Tent beginning at 1pm for those that want to float a lantern.  The lanterns are given on a first come first serve basis and it is asked that each family take only one lantern.  All four sides can be written on.

If you are not going to be on Oahu for Memorial Day you can still pay your respects at Pearl Harbor all year long.  Hawaii Discount offers a variety of Pearl Harbor Tours to meet your needs.  I highly recommend that everyone experience Pearl Harbor – it is a deeply moving experience.

Have a great Memorial Day! Thank you to all that have served and to those that are currently serving our country!
