Puka Dog Hula Dog
I am a Travel Channel junkie and it will come as no surprise that my favorite Travel Channel shows are ones that feature Hawaii. I loved the Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations Hawaii episode. On this episode he went to the Waikiki location of Puka Dog (now called Hula Dog). As I watched the episode I made a note that Hula Dog was one Waikiki restaurant that I wanted to check out!
When we reached Hula Dog there was a line outside the door. They make each Hula Dog to order so if you are in a hurry this is not the place for you. I had high expectations so I didn’t mind the wait. As I waited I checked out the menu. I chose Polish Sausage, Mild, Mango Relish and Lilikoi Mustard.
Hula Dog bakes its own bread. For each order they take a small loaf of bread and use their special equipment to toast a hole in the bread. Next they fill it with garlic lemon secret sauce, your choice of tropical relish and your choice of condiments.
Finally they put the Polish Sausage into the bread.
Don’t forget to order the fresh squeezed lemonade. They made it right in front of me and it was amazing!
Finally we had the chance to try the famous Puka Dog Hula Dog!
I am not exaggerating when I say it was the best hot dog I have ever had! I was even expecting to be disappointed from the hype. I loved the unique taste from the tropical relish. I have never had a hot dog without ketchup so I got ketchup on the side but I never used it because the Hula Dog was perfect without it.
After a day on Waikiki Beach or enjoying the best Hawaii Activities stop by Hula Dog for a delicious lunch or dinner! Hot dogs are not what one usually thinks of when they think of food in Hawaii but the delicious homemade bread, sausage and delicious tropical relish make Puka Dog a must on your Hawaii Vacation!
Have you had a Puka Dog Hula Dog? Did you think it was amazing or overrated?
