The Best Hawaiian Shave Ice – Ululanis Shave Ice

Search for the Best Hawaiian Shave Ice

Not only have I been on a quest to experience the best Hawaii Activities but I have another personal mission – to find the best Hawaiian Shave Ice. Shave Ice is the best way to cool off in Hawaii. I have stopped at numerous Hawaiian Shave Ice shops and carts throughout Hawaii. I have blogged about 2 of them, Matsumoto’s Shave Ice on Oahu and Ono Ono Shave Ice on Kauai. After tasting numerous servings of Hawaiian Shave Ice I think I have found the best – Ululanis Shave Ice on Maui.

“All Shave Ice Is Not Created Equal” –

Ululani and David Yamashiro are the masterminds behind Ululani Shave Ice. We met David one night in Lahaina. He was raving about his Hawaiian Shave Ice and that it truly was the best in Hawaii. I was pessimistic – of course he was going to think it was the best since he owned it. The only way to know was to try it out myself. The next night John and I went to Ulalana at the Maui Theatre and then hit Ululanis Shave Ice for a post show treat.

When we reached the Lahaina location of Ululanis Shave Ice there was a line (usually a sign of delicious shave ice) but it moved quickly. When we reached the front we were greeted by the friendliest “shaviceta” I have ever met! Ululanis Shave Ice prides itself on the customer experience and if you let them know some of your likes and dislikes they will help you order the perfect Hawaiian Shave Ice.

The flavor combinations are endless. I ordered Lilikoi (Passion Fruit), Lychee and Mango. I also ordered cream on top. Other add ons include Roselani’s Macadamia Nut Ice Cream, Snow Cap, Shredded Coconut, Homemade Azuki Beans, Fresh Mochi Balls and Tapioca pearls in Coconut Milk.

The Ice – To me the first variable in making the best Hawaiian Shave Ice is the….ICE! Ululanis Shave Ice has the softest ice I have ever tasted.  It is made with filtered, ultra purified water. The ice was fine, soft and smooth.

The Syrup – The second variable is the syrup. Ululanis uses fruit juices, premium purees, extracts, concentrates and pure cane sugar. Yamashiro says “They taste exactly like biting into the fresh fruit itself” and once I tasted it I agree!

Ululanis Hawaiian Shave Ice opened in Lahaina Maui in December 2008. Today Ululanis has 2 locations (less than 200 feet from each other) in Lahaina, a location in Kahului and another location in Kihei. It is rated 5 Stars on Tripadvisor and Yelp. Ululanis Shave Ice was voted Best Shave Ice on Maui in the Maui Time Newspaper and is the only shave ice shop written up in the 2012 and 2010 Top Maui Restaurants Book.

Now that I have found the best Hawaiian Shave Ice is my search over? Absolutely not! I will continue to test out Hawaiian Shave Ice – it is a tough job but someone has to do it! I will admit it is going to be hard to beat the texture and flavor of Ululanis Shave Ice!

Where is your favorite place to get Hawaiian Shave Ice? What is your favorite Shave Ice flavor?

Aloha. Have been a fan of David & Ululani’s since they opened. Have been to all of their shops, sometimes multiple shops in the same day. We live on the Big Island now, and I cannot have a shave ice here, because they do not even come close to what you get at Ululani’s. Good thing Mokulele Air is only about $69 to Maui. Worth the price to visit David and the staff.

Jeff – I completely agree! The same thing happened to us recently on Kauai! Although we found some good shave ice on Kauai there is none that compares to Ululanis! It is the best and yes the airline ticket would be worth it just to go to Ululanis!
