Tunnels Beach – North Shore of Kauai

Tunnels Beach

Tunnels Beach, also known as Makua Beach, is one of the best Kauai beaches. Tunnels Beach offers a great location for Kauai snorkeling, swimming, scuba diving and surfing. The beach is 2 miles long, running from Hanalei Colony Resort to Haena Beach Park.

Tunnels Beach on the North Shore of Kauai has something for everyone. The shallow inner reef is great for beginner snorkelers. Advanced divers and snorkelers enjoy exploring the tunnels and caverns of the outer reef. The outer reef is also a great location for experienced surfers and windsurfers. The reef  is so big it can be seen from space!

Some (divers) say Tunnels Beach got its name from the tunnels and arches in the reef. Others (surfers) say is got its name from the tunnel shaped waves often seen at this Kauai Beach.

Tunnels Beach is a great location to check out on your Kauai Vacation!

How to get to Tunnels Beach? Drive west of Princeville on 560 and go 1.1 miles west of the Hanalei Colony Resort.

Parking: Tunnels Beach connects to Haena Beach Park.  Parking is limited at Tunnels so you may have to park at Haena Beach Park.

Some of the best snorkeling anywhere! Not over crowded and gorgeous to boot! A great area to spot turtles at certain times of the year. ENJOY!

Tunnels is awesome. Every time I went there it was never crowded and there was so much to see. Great views of everything and it’s down the road just a little bit from the Farmer’s Market on Thursdays. I recommend spending at least a little time every day while you’re there.

I have been scuba diving at Tunnels for many years. It is almost the only shore dive area on the north side of Kauai, and it is wonderful! Many swim-throughs punctuate the lava rocks which begin near the beach. Going further west to Haena, it is smooth sand and constant gentle waves (except in the winter, when it gets very rough). Ditto on the parking—get there early in the day, or late afternoon!

Thank you Bill! I haven’t tried scuba diving yet but I think I have waited long enough and it is next on my list!
