I am thrilled to announce that Hawaii Discount Blog will have a guest blogger joining us for the next 3 months. MT is a champion East Coast Surfer who will be attending the University of Hawaii this summer. Be sure to subscribe to our blog to keep up with her adventures “University of Hawaii – Hawaii Tours and College Life.”
This story starts back a few years ago while I was in high school. I was trying to convince my mother that I should go to Hawaii for the summer. “By YOURSELF?” she would answer with doubt in her voice. Least to say it took a while to convince nearly everyone. Back then, going to Hawaii seemed like the biggest far fetched dream, leaving my small little island alone to go to another island over 5,000 miles away. But then again I always dream big and usually with a vague plan of grand adventure.
I met a man by the name of John at a coffee shop April 2012. He was wearing a shirt that said Honolulu and was furiously typing away on his computer. I was sitting with a friend just enjoying the morning and both of us were wondering what he was doing. Finally I worked up the courage to ask him a question.
“Excuse me.” I said, “Are you working?”
“Yes”, he replied slightly bewildered that I was talking to him.
“Tell me”, I said, “Where do you work? So I might know where to get a job working in a coffee shop.”
He chuckled at my little joke. John replied, “I own a travel company.”
In excitement I said, “Where too?”
That was the end of the beginning right there. I fell into a job at Hawaii Discount where I would update website pages from a coffee shop and learn how a real business is operated. The job with Hawaii Discount has been quite a tease. I work with, research, and learn about everything Hawaii. Those islands did not seem so far away any more.
Shortly after, during my senior year in high school I met my thrill seeking best friend, Lauren. Like myself she is always ready to do something. She was the first person I convinced that going to Hawaii was a great idea, and she wanted to come with me. Now as a team we had to convince our families. After much talking and talking it came down to one condition. We were only allowed to go if we stayed at the University of Hawaii and received college credit. Cannon’s fired, streamers falling from the air, and a grand parade filled our minds the moment the deal was made. Lauren and I immediately applied to the University of Hawaii as soon as we possibly could! Patiently (or really impatiently) we waited and waited for our acceptance letters till mid January of 2013.
Now that our families knew we were serious about spending the summer in Hawaii they were ready to help. Lauren’s father is a serious traveler and has earned an abundance of sky miles. He was willing to help out our poor college student souls and use some of his sky miles. In February 2013, we were jumping for joy! We have a place to sleep, a place to eat, and warm blue waters calling our name! Currently our depart date is May 25th. I am about to jump out of my skin I am so excited. The days tick by so slowly through school, and it does not help that the weather is warming up. I have been waiting to surf the rolling blue waves of Oahu ever since I was little. These magical islands are calling my name.
Soon I will not be writing to from a little college on the East Coast, I will be writing to you from the middle of the Pacific Ocean! While I am at the University of Hawaii I will let you know about all of the cool and interesting things I find and the best Hawaii Tours. Be sure to subscribe to Hawaii Discount Blog to keep up with my adventures. Who knows what will happen. But unplanned parts are always the best.
Until next time, Aloha!
