If you want to experience an easily accessible waterfall be sure to check out Wailua Falls just north of Lihue on Kauai. This stunning 80-foot tiered waterfall is located on the south end of the Wailua River. If you are feeling brave you can take a slippery trail down to the bottom of Wailua Falls. The trail is short but steep and very muddy. At the bottom you can take a dip in the cool, mountain pool.
In ancient times, Hawaiian warriors would jump from the top of the falls to prove their bravery. Jumping or even hiking to the top of the falls is strongly discouraged because of the danger involved.
You may recognize Wailua Falls from the opening scene in the popular television show, Fantasy Island. It is easy to see this film location because it is well marked, and has a developed viewpoint.
How to get there: From Hwy 56, about 1.2 miles north of Lihue (in Hanamaulu), turn west on Hwy 583 (Maalo Rd.). Drive 3.9 miles to the Wailua Falls viewpoint.
“Think of your life as a waterfall; it may come crashing down at some point, it may have it’s ups and downs, but in the end, it will continue to flow.” – Unknown
